Horse Camp and Retreats

Want to spend more than a couple hours with the horses? We can make that happen!

Option A: Camp Lipizzan

Are you a writer? Camp Lipizzan is Horse Camp for Writers: a free-form, user-friendly gathering of writers for an average of three days (does not need to be a weekend; can take place at midweek if that works better for you), and up to five days for repeat campers and camper referrals. The basic format is writers’ retreat: a quiet, rural location in southern Arizona near Tucson, with farmhouse amenities–two guest rooms, shared bath, friendly room cats (though we have a Cat-Free Room for those who need it)–and good plain food, and of course hot and cold running Lipizzans. This is a working horse farm; the schedule revolves around the horses. Campers can participate as much or as little in that part of the experience as they choose. We offer a session with our trainer, who does yoga for riders, equine sports massage, and riding instruction, for an additional charge. This is popular.
As for the writing half of the experience, this is also up to the individual. Most campers like the writer’s retreat model: an alternating schedule of getting together to talk about writing, and going off to write on one’s own. The house is roomy, with wi-fi DSL and comfy chairs; there are five acres to wander around in (lots of wildlife, and big shady trees for sitting under), and rural roads for walking and running. Some camps will feature a writers’ workshop with ms. reading and critique, led by one of the campers. Other camps are more free-form and feature a whole lot of intensive writing.

If this intrigues you, email Judy at capriole at gmail dot com.  She can set up a specific date for you and a friend or two, or you may join a Camp that is already scheduled.  She also offers manuscript critiques and mentoring. Contact her with any questions or details.

Option B: Yoga/Relaxation Retreat

Want to get away from it all? Dancing Horse Farm and the Desert Horse Institute are coordinating design-your-own yoga retreats. Either stay in Vail with the Lipizzans or nearby at a location such as Civano Bed and Breakfast. Enjoy yoga classes taught by Jenny, riding lessons with Stacey at either Dancing Horse Farm or River Valley Ranch, and a massage by fellow horsewoman Monica. All levels of yoga and horse experience are welcome.
